What is an area of cover?

The area of cover is the geographical or territorial limits of your plan, specifying in which countries you’re covered and which countries you’re not.

What is “in-patient only” cover?

An in-patient is someone who’s been formally admitted to a hospital for medical treatment, staying in a hospital bed for at least one night. Health insurance plans are typically divided into in-patient plans and comprehensive plans.

In-patient plans cover you only for treatment you receive while you’re admitted to hospital. These plans are usually cheaper.

Comprehensive plans also cover you for primary care and everyday medical costs. These plans usually more expensive.

Close

How do I pay premiums?

The premium you see is the amount that you’ll pay each month for your health plan. Once you’ve selected a health plan to personalise, you can choose a different payment frequency. Paying annually is the cheapest option overall. There’s a 3% surcharge if you pay half-yearly and a 5% surcharge if you pay monthly or quarterly. You can pay your premium by credit or debit card, bank transfer or cheque.

Close

What is medical underwriting?

When you apply for a health plan, we assess your medical records, including any medical conditions or injuries you have suffered in the past. This process is known as medical underwriting. It helps us decide the terms on which we can offer you cover.

Full medical underwriting (no cover for pre-existing medical conditions)

Moratorium (pre-existing medical conditions may become eligible for cover if you haven’t experienced symptoms for a certain period)

Switch (we adopt the similar terms to those you enjoyed under your previous insurer)

Cover in the USA

None of the areas of cover include cover in the USA as standard. This is because private healthcare in the USA is extremely expensive and most of our members do not need cover there. But if you do need cover for temporary trips to the USA, we have two options for you: -

USA-45 (cover for temporary trips of up to 45 days)

USA-90 (cover for temporary trips of up to 90 days)

These options are only available if you have selected Zone 1 as your area of cover.

Close

What is an excess?

An excess is the amount you pay out-of-pocket before your plan begins to pay for your healthcare.

A per claim excess is the amount you pay each time you make a new claim for a new medical condition.

A per annum excess is the total amount you’ll be out-of-pocket in a single year of your plan.

The best excess for you depends on your needs. We see the excess as a partnership between us and our members. A higher excess helps reduce our spending on medical treatment, and we pass on savings to your premium. So—as a rule of thumb, a higher excess means a lower premium for your plan.

Close

What is an excess?

An excess is the amount you pay out-of-pocket before your plan begins to pay for your healthcare. With a US$250 per annum excess, you pay the first US$250 for your medical treatment each year. Once you’ve selected a health plan to personalise, you can choose a different excess. As a rule of thumb, a higher excess means a lower premium for your plan.

Close

Hospital room types

The cost of your hospital treatment often depends on what type of room you're staying in. If you stay in a private room, you'll pay much more for your treatment costs - even though the standard of care and other services are exactly the same.

By choosing a non-private room you can greatly reduce the cost of your hospital treatment, and we'll pass on savings to your premium

Semi-private hospital rooms
A semi-private room is an en-suite room shared with one another patient, typically with a curtain separating your preivate area.

Private hospital rooms
A private room is an en-suite single room, in which you'll be the only guest.

If you obtain a quote from our website, your quote is valid for 30 days or until 31st December of the current year (whichever is soonest). Your quote is subject to completion of an application form and our medical underwriting process. We offer insurance plans on behalf of two insurers, both of which are companies in the Allianz group. AWP P&C SA UK is the insurer of our health and personal accident insurance plans for residents of the UK. AWP Health & Life SA is the insurer of health and personal accident insurance plans for residents in all other countries, and our life and income protection insurance plans in all countries. We are authorised and regulated in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority, and we are registered in Belgium with the Financial Services & Markets Authority. We’re not authorised to provide you with advice on insurance. We simply provide information on our plans and services so you can make an informed decision.

What is international life insurance?

Life insurance helps you to safeguard your family's financial future should you pass away. You'll leave behind a cash lump-sum to help maintain your family's standard of living or to pay off a mortgage or debt. While domestic life insurance might not cover you if you die abroad, with international life insurance you’ll be covered around the world.

You can insure your life for any amount up to US$2m or £1.5m or €1.7m. This is the amount your beneficiaries would receive if you passed away. The sum you insure cannot exceed 20x your current annual earnings.

Close

What is the accident benefit?

With the optional accident benefit, your family will receive an additional cash lump-sum if your death is caused by an accident. If you suffer a serious injury in an accident, we'll pay the cash lump- sum directly to you.

The accident benefit is only available if you also purchase life insurance. You can purchase accident cover up to US$500k or £375k or €500k, but the sum you insure cannot exceed your life benefit.

Close

What is income protection?

An income protection plan pays you a replacement income if you’re unable to work because of illness or injury.

You can insure up to 75% of your annual salary, up to a maximum of US$144k or £108k or €144k. This is the replacement income we’ll pay you if you’re unable to work because of illness or injury.

Payment of your replacement income starts after your deferment period. You can choose a deferment period of 3 months or 6 months. Premiums are higher with a 3-month deferment period, because payment of your replacement income starts sooner.

Country where you’ll be needing cover

The country where you’ll be needing cover (also known as ‘country of residence’) is the country where you’ll be living or working, or spending most of your time. Our plans are designed for expats (eg a British national living in Hong Kong, a French national living in Brazil). Typically, our members are permanently resident in a foreign country. But we can sometimes insure people who expect to spend at least 6 months of the year living or travelling abroad. In certain countries, we can cover people living in their country of nationality.

Close

What is my country of nationality?

Your country of nationality is the country stated on your passport (eg United States, Netherlands). If you have dual nationality, you can choose whichever nationality you prefer. We can insure people of every nationality!
